Getting involved at the grass-root levels with street children in
India brings one face to face with the stark reality of their existence and the
enormity of the task that lies ahead. Even where incentives exist in the form of
free education, food and health care, street children are unable to attend regular
school. They have no proper homes and living in temporary, dingy shacks, they have
no access to water; they often go hungry for want of fuel and money. Their very existence
becomes the concern of those who want to take education to them. In a broader perspective
then, taking school to such children in the least means filling their bellies, giving them
basic health care, providing them with safe drinking water and giving them a hug when they
are hurt or crying.
In the years ahead, we visualize a Green School with open spaces, where classes would still be held under the trees and where children would learn by doing. The building would comprise of simple low cost structures, that would house labs and workshops, art and craft centers library and computer center, facility for music and dance, an open air auditorium to stage and showcase creativity. There shall be facilities for games and training for athletics’. Our school will be powered by solar and wind energy.
Our mission is to create a level playfield for these children to enable them to get into the mainstream and excel.
Dedication, commitment and transparency are the values that guide us in this venture. Awakening joy in creative learning and constant and never-ending improvement are our mottos. For the founders it is a labor of love and a source of happiness and fulfillment.
Prakash Deep believes in providing free and open environment which does not constrain children’s preference for open spaces they have been used to. Rabindranath Tagore’s Shanti Niketan is the role model we have. Our guiding principle is this Nobel Laureate’s famous following poem -
